In October of 2003 I photographed some of the gravestones in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery in Minersville, PA. In the summer of 2004, Mary-Ann B. transcribed a few stones in St. Nick's and Saints Peter & Paul and forwarded the information to me for inclusion here. I'm grateful to her, as well as Debbie Greenlee, who did the hard work of transcribing my photos. Jesse Savage kindly helped me with the Cyrillic.
Please note that there's a much more thorough transcription of St. Nick's available that covers a lot of the stones represented here. It's not complete, however, so some of the stones listed here are not in the other transcription and vice versa. I'm too lazy to delete the duplicates from this list, so they'll remain here until the other transcription is 100% complete.
The stones transcribed below represent a small portion of the gravestones in the graveyard of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Minersville, PA. I listed the stones in two separate tables. The first table is from my photos in 2003. I tried to focus on names that I thought I recognized from the Bukowsko Triangle. The second table is from Mary-Ann B.'s data and is organized slightly differently.
About the table below: The first column is a number assigned by the transcriber to each tombstone. Duplicate numbers indicate multiple names on a stone (like Thomas and Sophia on #2). The numbers are not otherwise significant. The relationship is what was written on the gravestone. The Polish surname column shows how the surname was probably spelled in Polish. There's a couple of important things to keep in mind about this column. First, these spellings are only guesses by Debbie and myself. Some (like Kramar and Semańczyk) we can verify independently, but not all. Second, this is a Ukrainian cemetery and the people buried here that were born in Europe used the Cyrillic alphabet. That subject is out of the scope of this Web page, but you should read more about Americanized Bukowsko Triangle names.
